Berlin

The ship docked in Warnemunde, Germany. This is a 3 hour train ride from Berlin. Today was even warmer than yesterday, around 90 degrees. On the last cruise it was 55 so we shouldn’t complain. The electric train to Berlin was a private charter, no A/C, 6 people to a compartment, and a box lunch. We met up with a couple from our dining table, Dave and Lisa from NJ. The other couple in the compartment were a very nice retired couple from Florida. We had so much fun that we didn’t even notice the time. We did find out something interesting about the trains in Germany. When you use the restroom and flush, you can see the tracks. It dumps it right down on the tracks. This is especially pleasing when someone uses it in the train station. I will NEVER walk on train tracks again!

We had a long, hot day in Berlin. We saw all the sites and had lunch at the Lowenbrau Restaurant. We had a authentic German buffet lunch. While everyone had their fill of sausages and various dead animals,  Mary and I had a salad, mashed potatoes, boiled potatoes and a a pretzel. We rode in the nicest tour bus that we have ever seen. We criss-crossed Berlin and saw Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, and the Reichstag. We got back to the ship at 9:00 and the sun was still up. The ship had hired a German brass band and brought in beer from a local brewery. They also brought in a big variety of local snausages.  We watched the ship sail from our deck at 11:00. We had to move our clocks another hour ahead but Mary got a second (third? fourth?) wind and wanted to go to the casino and see the slot machine called ‘The Village People’ – It is a good thing that tomorrow is a day at sea.
