I ordered the Amazon Fire TV last night and it arrived at 9:45 A.M.
It came nicely packed. A good quality package.
I put the spoon there for size reference. The hardest thing to open was the wrap on the Amazon batteries.
I hooked up the Cat6 cable (it also has Wi-Fi), the power and the HDMI cable. You can see the size is slighly larger that the Apple TV2 that sits on top.
I used the cables that were used by my Xbox 360 that I removed yesterday. I renamed my Harmony Remote activity to Amazon Fire TV and that was all I had to do. I don’t know if it will be (eventually) possible to use the remote to power on/off the box with the Harmony. In any case I have not found a way to turn the box off so it isn’t an issue.
The box booted and was configured for my Amazon Prime account. I had to wait about 4 minutes for an update. After that I spent 30 minutes playing around with it. I set up Plex to access my NAS drive with all my movies/photos/videos. I loaded a few games and apps. Netflix and Showtime work very well. Pandora/Vevo/Amazon Instant Video/Plex/You Don’t Know Jack all work flawlessly. There is a delay the first time you open a new program but you can tell it is just doing a first-time config.
My initial opinion? This is a beautiful thing. The first thing you notice is that the sound is incredible! The picture is perfect and the menu system is as easy as the Apple TV2. I played movies/games/videos/music and it worked flawlessly, no buffering.
That is my first look. I will return after I have spent more time with the box.
